Cynthia Voigt

Cynthia Voigt ( born February 25, 1942 in Boston, Massachusetts) is an American children's author.

Life and work

Cynthia Voigt grew up in Connecticut, where she attended the Dana Hall School. In 1963 she received her degree at Smith College in Massachusetts. Then she initially taught in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and later English at a high school in Glen Burie and in Annapolis, Maryland. In 1981 she began to write and was later teaching altogether. Cynthia Voigt lives with her husband and two children on the Deer Isles, Maine.

In addition to individual, independent novels, she created three chronologies:

  • The series The Kingdom, consisting of four books, set in a fictional (not really existing ) Kingdom. The personal stories of the individual characters fit into a medieval political environment and usually have the rebellion of the main character against family or system on the subject.
  • The Tillerman cycle tells of the growth of the four Tillerman children who were abandoned by their mother and are initially quite alone on its own before they stay with their grandmother. Some volumes also act Friends of the Tiller Mans.
