Cyzicus (mythology)

Cyzicus (Greek Κύζικος ) is in the Argonauts of Greek mythology, the young king of Dolionen on the Propontis.

He is the son of Aineus and Ainete, daughter of Eusoros, or Eusoros itself, and married to Kleite, the daughter of Merops. Since they got married only recently, marriage is still childless. However, According to another version, he leaves sons. Also, Larissa, daughter of Piasos, known as his bride.

Cyzicus is the founder and king of the eponymous city of Cyzicus. Cyzicus takes the Argonauts on their way to Colchis friendly in his city, and provides them with sufficient supplies for their onward journey. When the Argonauts are back slyly by contrary winds in the dark of night ignorant to the coast of Dolionen, ensues a battle between Dolionen and the Argonauts, as both sides do not recognize and consider hostile strangers to each other. In the course of this struggle Cyzicus, is killed by Jason (or Heracles ), which does not recognize the friend in the black of night by mistake in battle. The next day as the Argonauts realize their mistake, they bury him solemnly.
