D. Maria II National Theatre

The Teatro Nacional D. Maria II is a theater in Lisbon.

History

On September 28, 1836 received Almeida Garrett ( 1799-1854 ) by the newly appointed Minister Manuel Passos the contract to design a national theater on Rossio Square, on the site of the ruins of the burnt down in the same year Palácio dos Estaus (formerly Treasury and office of the Inquisition in Portugal). However, the country was after Miguelistenkrieg and September revolution further into turmoil, and the construction was delayed. According to the plans of the Italian architect Fortunato Lodi, the theater was then built in the neoclassical style from 1842 to 1846, and opened as part of the celebrations for the 27th birthday of Queen Mary II on 13 April 1846. The theater remained after the proclamation of the Portuguese Republic in 1910 on state-owned and has been renamed Teatro Nacional de Almeida Garrett. The artistic direction were each handed a theater company which was selected by tender. The Kompagnie of Amélia Rey Colaço and Robles Monteiro led the theater 's longest from 1929 to 1964. Then a fire destroyed the building, except for its outer walls, completely. It has been faithfully reconstructed and reopened in 1978, after the Carnation Revolution and the end of the Estado Novo regime and its colonial wars.

The building is a historical monument since 1928.

The theater today

Located directly on the Rossio Square, the building houses a main hall, the Sala Garrett with 436 seats (originally 699 ), and the studio, the Sala Estúdio Amélia Rey Colaço / Robles Monteiro with 91 seats (originally 80).

Since 2008, Maria João Monteiro Brilhante directs the theater is state-owned. The artistic director, the director João Mota held since 2011, as the successor of the actor Diogo Infante who is not agreeing with the deep cuts in government grants, and was subsequently relieved of his duties in November 2011.

In the main hall mostly classics will be performed, while more new pieces are shown in the studio. In April / May 2012 Georg Büchner A Morte de Danton ( Danton's Death ) and O Comboio because Madrugada by Tennessee Williams were played in the Sala Garrett, while in the studio Onde Estavas Quando Criei O Mundo? ( Artur Ribeiro ) and Diagnóstico: Hamlet were performed by Miquel Gallardo.
