The Baltic Orchid ( Dactylorhiza baltica ) belongs to the genus of orchids ( Dactylorhiza ) in the orchid family. Synonyms are Dactylorhiza longifolia and D. majalis subsp. longifolia.

Features

The Baltic orchid is a perennial, herbaceous plant growing, flowering individuals reach their stature heights between 15 and 70 centimeters. The mottled leaves are unlike broadleaf orchid ( Dactylorhiza majalis ) is significantly elongated - hence the epithet longifolia. The inflorescence is dense. Not infrequently, about 50 flowers are present on a plant. The lip is trilobal, the center panel is considerably longer than the side tabs. All three lobes are not pointed, but rounded in contrast to other species of the genus.

Distribution and location

The plant reaches its western limit of distribution in the Baltic, eastward to their area stretches up to China and Mongolia. One finds this kind in fens with lime - or base-rich soils, on wet meadows, and partly on dry meadows. Against the plant is tolerant of partial shade.
