The Blood Red Orchid ( Dactylorhiza cruenta ) belongs to the genus of orchids ( Dactylorhiza ) in the orchid family. It is often regarded as a subspecies of flesh -colored orchid as ( syn. Dactylorhiza incarnata subsp. Cruenta ). The key difference to this are the many flowing intertwining spots on the top and bottom of the leaves and bracts of blood red leaved orchid. It is a perennial, herbaceous plant growing, flowering individuals reach their stature heights between 15 and 40 centimeters. Unlike the name suggests, but not the flowers are pink to violet, blood red.

Distribution and location

The plant is to be found in Central and Eastern Europe, the distribution extends to Siberia. One finds this kind in fens with lime - or base-rich soils.
