Description

The elder orchid is a perennial, herbaceous plant, reaching the heights of growth of about 10 to 30 centimeters. On top edged stems four to six upside - lanceolate leaves are distributed. You are always unspotted and taper to a point.

The flowers are grouped in an up to 15 centimeters long, dense and reichblütigen ear. The foliage leaf-like bracts are colored green. The lowest surpass significantly the flowers. The scented faintly of elder flowers are bright yellow to bright yellow or orange to purple colored, the lip center but always have a dark- red dots. The ratio of the two color variations ( Blütenfarbenpolymorphismus ) is variable, mixed colors are rare. The lateral sepals are repulsed. The nearly round lip is three-lobed indistinct. The spur is usually bent down steep.

The flowering period extends from May to June.

Dissemination

The distribution area includes most of Europe, is restricted to the Mediterranean region but on the mountains. The species occurs from the colline to the montane zone before. In Germany it rises in the Alps up to 1200 m above sea level. In Austria, the species is found scattered. In Vorarlberg, Tyrol and Northern this species is extinct.

The plant prefers lean as location, extensively managed meadows and pastures on lime-free or superficially decalcified ground.
