Dagestan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic

The Dagestan ASSR (Russian Дагестанская АССР; Dagestan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic) was an autonomous Soviet republic in the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic ( RSFSR ) within the Soviet Union. She lay in the Caucasus in the southern part of Russia. It existed from 1921 until 1991. 's Capital was Makhachkala. Since 1991, the area known as the Republic of Dagestan federal subject of Russia. The region has significant deposits of oil, natural gas, coal and sulfur and important ports on the Caspian Sea. The population consists of numerous nations, including Avars, Lezgins, Dargin, Kumyks, Azerbaijanis and Russians.
