Dallas Wind Symphony

Dallas Wind Symphony is the name of a symphonic wind band ( concert band ) from Dallas (Texas, USA). Recordings of the orchestra were nominated in 1993 and 2007 for a Grammy Award.

History

The orchestra was founded in 1985 by Kim Campbell and Howard Dunn, professor of music at Southern Methodist University. It was originally intended to continue to give independent musicians after leaving high school and college the opportunity to play challenging music for symphonic band. After initially occasional public performances a series of concerts in the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center was established in 1990.

After the death of Howard Dunn 1991, in 1993 Jerry F. Junkin, Director of Bands at the University of Texas at Austin, the new artistic director and conductor. From the mid 1990s until his death in 2004, Frederick Fennell worked as an important guest conductor with the orchestra.

Work

The orchestra has released since 1991 thirteen recordings for Reference Recordings, ten of these photographs were taken in the HDCD process. Two recordings were nominated for Grammy Awards - Trittico (1993, Producer of the Year, Classical ) and Garden of Dreams (2007, Best Engineered Album, Classical ).

Together with the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra Dallas Wind Symphony is counted among the leading symphonic concert bands in the world.
