The municipality is located in the north of Iceland Dalvíkurbyggð in the region Norðurland eystra. On 1 January 2009 it had 1947 inhabitants.

The main town of the municipality is Dalvik with 1412 inhabitants, a further larger settlements are Hauganes with 134 inhabitants and Litli - Árskógssandur with 138 inhabitants.

Geographical location

The municipality covers a coastal strip on the west side of Eyjafjörður between Akureyri and Ólafsfjörður where the three settlements Dalvik, Hauganes and Árskógarsandur lie, and the valleys Svarfaðardalur and the nature reserve Skíðadalur, leading into the interior of the Tröllaskagi peninsula on which the town lies.

History

The municipality was created on 7 June 1998 by the merger of the city Dalvik ( Dalvíkurkaupstaður ) with the two rural communities Svarfaðardalur ( Svarfaðardalshreppur ) and Árskógur ( Árskógshreppur ).

Transport links

The road 82 leads from Akureyri along the Eyjafjörður about Dalvik after Ólafsfjörður. From their branches in or with Dalvik from the branch roads 806, 807 and 805, the usher after Tröllaskagi.

The ferry runs from Dalvik to the island Grimsey, which lies in the Arctic Ocean off Iceland. The island is accessible by ferry Hrísey.

An international airport is located in Akureyri. After Reykjavík there are 412 kilometers.

Hauganes and Árskógssandur

Both belonging to the municipality of villages are located just south of Dalvik direction Akureyri.

In the villages, the main income is fishing, fish processing and tourism. From Árskógssandur the ferry to the island Hrísey of Hauganes of you can participate in whale watching tours on the fjord.
