Damgan

Damgan is a commune with 1629 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011 ) in the department of Morbihan in the Brittany region. It belongs to the community association Communauté de communes Arc Bretagne Sud.

Location

Damgan located on a located between the mouth of Penerf and the mouth of the Vilaine Peninsula. To the west lies the Rhuys peninsula, north of the town of Ambon.

Damgan has been known since the early 20th century as a seaside resort and has eight kilometers of sandy beach. Most important districts are former fishing villages Penerf and Kervoyal and the main town Damgan.

Demography

The population of the municipality Damgan is on the steady growth, from 812 in 1962 to 1629 (1 January 2011).

In 2007, there were 4055 residences in Damgan, including 3295 ( = 81.3 %), second homes, which are usually used only during the summer months.

Economy and Transport

Tourism

The most important industry is tourism. Overnight accommodations are available in two hotels, many private homes and more than 20 campsites. 97 % of holidaymakers in 2009 (as measured by the number of visitors at the tourist office ) came from France.

Oyster farming

Besides tourism, the municipality owns with oyster farming in the estuary of the Pénerf a second economic pillar. The first breeding parks for oysters were founded here in 1858. Eight of these oyster farms are located in the village Penerf on the banks of the river of the same name.

Traffic

Damgan is about 7 km south of the highway-like upgraded N165, which runs from Nantes via Vannes, Lorient and Quimper to Brest. The nearest railway station is Questembert.

Using a bike ferry across the Penerf Damgan is connected to Le Tour du Parc.
