Dan Dailey

Daniel James Dailey (born 14 December 1913 in New York City, New York, USA, † October 16, 1978 in Los Angeles, California, USA) was an American film and theater actor.

Life

From a young age was Dan Dailey in minstrel shows and vaudeville on stage before on Broadway, he got first engagements since 1937. In 1940 he was in the film comedy Susan and God in a small supporting role for the first time on camera. In the same year he made his breakthrough as he played a Nazi in the film drama The Mortal Storm; although MGM Dailey then never undertook in earnest, but predominantly comic character roles.

1942 - after 18 movies, he turned in a period of two years - Dailey was drafted as a soldier of the Second World War, and paused to 1947 as an actor. 1948 Dailey stood in the musical film When My Baby Smiles at Me in front of the camera, and in 1949 nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor.

Although Dailey movies are completely unknown to a wider audience today, but one of his portrayal of the fictional Governor William Drinkwater in the sitcom The Governor & JJ, which he took over 1969-1970 to one of his most famous roles, for which he in 1970 with the Golden Globe Award.

Dailey was married three times; his only child, son Dan Dailey III, committed suicide in 1975, at the age of 28 years, suicide. Dan Dailey himself died three years later from anemia.

His younger sister, Irene Dailey ( * 1920 - † 2008) was also an actress.
