Dances of Death ( and Other Walking Shadows ) is the fourth studio album by the German progressive thrash metal band Mekong Delta. It appeared in 1990 at Aaarg Records.

Creation and publication

After The Principle of Doubt founding member Frank Fricke left the band during the recording of the new album Wolfgang Borgmann. The latter was replaced by Doug Lee. Dances of Death ( and Other Walking Shadows ) was recorded in the studio Herner Phoenix and produced by Ralf Hubert. In November 1990, Mekong Delta played in Vienna also their first concert. Shortly after replacing Peter Haas Jörg Michael. In 2002, a remastered version of the album was released by Zardoz Music with ( ungenanntem ) Bonus tracks, AFM Records put it on new 2007.

Style

Mekong Delta play on the album rapid progressive thrash metal with heavy riffs, many breaks, distinctive bass playing and melodic vocals. The compositions are varied and complex. The final piece is a catchy adaptation of a symphonic poem by Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky.

Reception

Dances of Death ( and Other Walking Shadows ) in 1990 was well received by the press and is now considered classics of the progressive metal. Frank from Trojan Rock Hard considers some passages of the first piece for " too much protracted " and preferred the second half of the album on which the band " Although verb-guesses/advises no revolutionary new ideas, but simply pressed great songs in vinyl ". Finds Georg Heep of the Baby Blue Pages, the band succeed it "like in all its previous plates, the rapid passage dragging the music to make extremely interesting through a myriad of twists and tunes ", and Michael Büttgen sums it up: "This album has everything must have a prog metal masterpiece. Great compositions, bubbling over with energy from beginning to end, rousing melodies, highly skilled musicians and [ ... ] heart blood. " Both Rock Hard and the eclipsed magazine took Dances of Death ( and Other Walking Shadows ) on their respective list of the most important prog metal releases.
