Danger Point

Geographical location

Danger Point is a promontory on the English Channel near the seaside resort of Budleigh Salterton in the county of Devon in the south of England.

Location

Danger Point is located about eighteen kilometers southeast of the city of Exeter, along the shoreline in about halfway between Exmouth and Sidmouth. Just a few hundred meters west of Danger Point is the mouth of the River Otter, from which extends the beach of Budleigh Salterton to the small bay Littleham Cove.

Jurassic Coast

The cliffs of the English Channel from East Devon and Dorset is one of the natural wonders of the world. From Orcombe Point at Exmouth to Old Harry Rocks at Studland Bay reaches a 155 km long coastline, which has been declared as the first natural landscape in England by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The rock face of Danger Point is part of this so-called Jurassic Coast.

The rock strata of the Jurassic Coast are tilted slightly to the east. The geologically oldest rocks are therefore located in the westernmost section of this Küstengeotops. To the east, the median age of the rocks decreases gradually. The natural outcrops along the coast form a substantially continuous sequence, ranging from the Triassic deposits, on the Jurassic to those of the Cretaceous geological period and represents a total of about 185 million years ago. The depositional area, who recorded the sedimentary series of the Jurassic Coast at the time, is the so-called Wessex Basin.

Geological details

Danger Point is still relatively far to the west of the Jurassic Coast and therefore belong there the bedrock to the older deposits of this cliff coast. It is red sandstones from the Triassic, which are referred to as lithostratigraphically Otter Sandstone Formation ( roughly translatable with Otter Sandstone Formation). The Otter Sandstone was deposited by rivers in lowlands with hot, dry climate. Fossils that were found in the Otter Sandstone, show that on the banks of these rivers plants grew and large reptiles lived.

The cliff of Danger Point is part of the type - profile of the Otter Sandstone.
