Daniel J. MacDonald

Daniel Joseph MacDonald PC ( born July 23, 1918 in Bothwell, Prince Edward Iceland, † 30 September 1980) was a Canadian soldier and politician of the Liberal Party, who was for several years a Member of the House of Commons and Minister.

Life

MacDonald, who was a farmer by profession, and in 1938 bought her very own farm, joined the unit of Prince Edward Highlanders of the Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery in August 1940. In June 1943 he moved to Cape Breton Regiment and participated in this until 1945 in the Second World War, in part, in which he was last promoted in October 1943 during his mission in Italy to the Sergeant. Later he served in the Prince Edward Iceland Regiment and reached there the rank of lieutenant colonel.

His political career began in his native province when he was first elected for the Liberal Party on 10 December 1962 at the constituency King's 1st District as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Iceland and this remained until 1972. After the Liberal Party had won in the provincial elections in 1966 the absolute majority, MacDonald was appointed on 28 July 1966 by Alex Campbell, the new Prime Minister of Prince Edward Iceland, the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry in the Cabinet and was part of this until 1972.

In the general election of 30 October 1972, he was first elected a deputy in the Canadian House of Commons and represented in this up to his defeat in the elections of 22 May 1979 constituency Cardigan. A few weeks after the 1972 election, he was appointed first time as Secretary of Veterans Affairs in the 20th Canadian Cabinet on 27 November 1972 by Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau and has held this ministerial office until June 3, 1979.

On February 18, 1980 MacDonald was again elected in the constituency Cardigan for deputies in the lower house and this was until his death on September 30, 1980. At the same time he was from March 3 to 30 September 1980 again Minister of Veterans Affairs in the cabinet 22 also formed by Trudeau Canada.
