Danish cuisine

The Danish cuisine is influenced by the geographical position of Denmark as a coastal state with its numerous islands and its distinct agriculture. It is rich in bread and bakery specialties and a variety of dairy products. Fish but also meat dishes dominate the main meals. The Danish food is considered to be particularly rich.

Well-known dishes and specialties

Particularly known abroad are smørrebrød and the Danish variation of the hot dogs with the characteristic red-colored sausage, the røde pølser.

The smørrebrød is a rich and imaginative with fish, meat or egg occupied and often seasoned with sauce tartare sauces or other thin black bread. Is eaten mainly around noon. In Denmark there are still special Smørrebrød stores and restaurants ( particularly in Copenhagen). The classic Danish hot dog is usually cooked with fried onions, sweet and sour cucumber slices and sauces such as ketchup, tartar sauce and a sweet mustard. The sausage is either grilled or heated in hot water.

Both fish and meat dishes are an integral part of the Danish kitchen. Frequently use place Saltwater fish are herring, plaice, eel and cod. One similarity with the north German cuisine lies in its recognition of the Labskaus.

A special role is to consume milk products a like cheese, yogurt and buttermilk ( kærnemælk ). Best known are the cheese and Havarti Esrom. Danish dairy specialties are ymer, a kind of thick yogurt with high protein content, which is often eaten with ymerdrys ( rye bread crumbs ), and the popular summer koldskål.

Pastries and desserts

The Danish cuisine is rich in desserts such as pies ( lagkager ) sweet buns ( boller ), cinnamon rolls, cinnamon cake ( kanelstang ), small donuts ( aebleskiver ), Gingerbread ( honningkager ) Plunderteigteilchen ( as wienerbrød ), multi-storey marzipan cake ( kransekake ) or chocolate balls.

Also widely used is the red fruit jelly with cream ( rødgrød med fløde ) or milk. Fresh strawberries with cream and soft serve ice cream are popular summer dishes.

Drinks

Danish beer ( øl ) is far beyond the country's borders known and widespread, including in particular the products of the fourth largest brewery group in the world, Carlsberg, Tuborg beer brands such as Carlsberg and; and faxes, manufactured by Royal Unibrew. It is known the Danish bitters Gammel Dansk. As Danish (but also generally Scandinavian ) Specialities Aquavit also apply (such as Aalborg Jubiläumsakvavit ) and Gløgg. Is initiated skål with the toast.

Others

The main meal in Denmark is the Middag or Aftensmad that is taken in the evening 17-19 clock.
