Dante Giacosa

Dante Giacosa ( born January 3, 1905 in Rome, † 21 March 1996 in Turin ) was an Italian automobile designer.

Dante Giacosa studied in Turin from 1922 to 1927 mechanical engineering. In 1926 he went to Fiat and developed aircraft engines. Then he joined the design department. He drew from 1933 the Italian "Volkswagen" Fiat 500 Topolino, presented at the Motor Show in Berlin 1936, and became famous overnight. He created several legendary vehicle models, and is among other things the father of the then-new spherical Fiat 500 rear-engined in 1955. Further models from his pen are the Fiat 124, Fiat 128 and Fiat 130 Between 1947 and 1967 he was Professor of machine Design at the University of Turin.

For his work he was awarded the Compasso d'Oro in 1959.

1970 Giacosa finished his work as an employee at Fiat, but remains consultant to the Directorate-General. 1981 gives him the Art Center College of Design honorary doctorate.
