The Giurgiu - Ruse Friendship Bridge or Bridge of Friendship (Bulgarian: Мост на дружбата, Most na druzhbata; Romanian: Podul prieteniei ) is a road and railway bridge over the Danube between the towns Giurgiu in Romania and Rousse in Bulgaria.

History

A short time after the end of World War II was the first project of a bridge between the cities of Ruse and Giurgiu, as can be seen on a Romanian stamp of the year 1948.

The detailed planning of the two-story steel - truss bridge gave Georgi Owtscharow († 1953). After his death, W. Andreev led the work on. Within two and a half years, 1952-1954, built a bridge builder with Soviet aid, the transport structure. It was opened on June 20, 1954 on two superimposed and separate bridge over the road and railway traffic is routed over the Danube.; also a sidewalk for pedestrians is available. The bridge is 2.8 km long and rises at its highest point 30 m above the water level. At the time of its opening, it was the longest combined bridge for automobile and railway transport in Europe. A 85 m long middle section of the bridge can be raised to allow larger ships a passage. The artistic design of the two bridge portals on Bulgarian and Romanian side took before the Ukrainian sculptor Mykhailo Ivanovich Paraschtschuk. The name of friendship bridge dates back to Soviet proposals. Since the fall of communism it is called usually only the first bridge over the Danube.

The Friendship Bridge was for many years the only fixed link across the 470 km long Bulgarian-Romanian section of the Danube. In 2007, the construction of a second bridge began in this area, the Vidin and Calafat connects. The second bridge over the Danube, called Europa Bridge, was opened in late summer 2013.

User fee

From the Romanian side a bridge where toll is collected. This is for car up to 12 tonnes including trailer 12 euros, for vehicles / buses over 12 tonnes and max. 3 axles 28 euros and for vehicles / buses over 12 tonnes and more than 3 axles 43 EUR (end of 2013).
