Dapitan

Dapitan City is a city in the province of Zamboanga del Norte in the Philippines.

It is also called the " Shrine City of the Philippines " because of the memorial, which commemorates the exile of Jose Rizal, the Philippine national hero.

Origin of the name

There are two versions of how Dapitan got its name. After the first the town was known earlier " Daquepitan ". The name later changed first to " Dacpitan " to be finally simplified to " Dapitan ".

The second version is based on the word Dapit that in the common in this area Cebuano dialect means as much as to invite. Then one day to a group of Boholanos from belonging to the province of Bohol Panglao island of Datu Pagbuaya, the recognized founder of the city, have been invited to follow him to Dakung Yuta. Dakung Yuta was the original name of Mindanao. The settlement, which they built after their arrival, they called Dapitan. Moreover, this is the traditional version of the Naming of the city.

History

The first settlers were the Subanons, a nomadic people of Indonesian descent that settled along the river banks ( " suba " = river). The fear of pirates, studied in the natural harbors that provides the bays along the coast to Dapitan in bad weather refuge that Subanons drive but deeper into the hinterland.

In early maps of Mindanao, the city is registered under different names. Term " Dapito " in the Kaerius map of 1598, as " Dapite " in Dudley 's map of 1646 as " Dapyto " in a Spanish map of 1652, the place appeared as Dapitan then in 1729 in Moll's map of the East Indies and in Murillo Velarde 's map of 1734th

With the arrival of the Spanish Jesuit missionaries, who established several mission stations on the peninsula came, so in Dapitan and in Iligan City and Butuan City. Outside these strategic " bridgeheads " but for a long time remained the hinterland of Christianity untouched. 1629 a regular mission was established in Dapitan, which was led by the Jesuit Father Petro Gutierrez.

On July 17, 1892, Jose Rizal was deported to the banning of the La Liga Filipina, to Dapitan. Rizal was accused of being involved in the activities of the nascent rebellion against the Spanish colonial power. During the period of his exile he built a school, a hospital and a water supply system and engaged in agriculture and horticulture. His stay lasted until 31 July 1896.

After the end of Spanish rule from 1898, the place was dependent on the province of Misamis. During the American occupation Dapitan became a part of the province of Zamboanga and remained so until it was divided in 1952 into two new provinces of Zamboanga del Norte and Zamboanga del Sur.

On June 22, 1963 Dapitan was amended by Republic Act No.. 3811 collected by the then President Diosdado Macapagal in the status of a notarized city. She was at that time the only city in the province of Zamboanga del Norte.

On 23 April 2000, the Jose Rizal Memorial Protected Landscape was established.
