DARPA Grand Challenge 2005

The DARPA Grand Challenge 2005 was a race between autonomous robotic vehicles, which took place from 8 to 9 October 2005 in the Mojave Desert in the southwestern United States. The start and finish were in Primm, Nevada.

The race was the second competition in the initiated by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency DARPA program to promote the development of autonomous vehicles. Winners of the doped with $ 2 million race, the team was led by Professor Sebastian Thrun of Stanford University with a modified VW Touareg named " Stanley ".

For the race, registered a total of 195 teams from 36 U.S. states and 4 other countries. From these a total of 43 teams were invited to a qualification, to provide the capability of their vehicles to the test and thus to qualify for the race after a preselection. The qualification survived 23 vehicles that eventually competed against each other in the race.

Qualification

To qualify, ( National Qualification Event ( NQE ) ) 40 vehicles were originally selected. On August 23, 2005 3 additional teams were authorized for qualification. The qualification was held from September 27 to October 5 in Fontana, California at the California Speedway. It qualified 23 out of 43 teams.

On 6 October, the eligible teams transported their vehicles to the launch site. October 7th was scheduled for repair work.

Race

The vehicles started sequentially at fixed time intervals, 22 vehicles on the 8th and one started on 9 October. Five teams have the full race distance of 131.6 miles ( 212.76 km ) to the finish cover. However, only four of the teams were able to meet even the time limit of ten hours.

Winner of the DARPA Grand Challenge 2005 is the " Stanford Racing Team " with their vehicle " Stanley ". Stanley overcame the rate in 6 hours 53 minutes and 8 seconds, which corresponds to an average speed of 19.1 mph ( 30.7 km / h ). Second and third in the race was the best team in the previous year " Red Team " or " Red Team Too " with the vehicles " Sandstorm " and " H1ghlander ". They needed 7:04:50, corresponding to 18.6 mph (29,9 km / h) and corresponding 7:14:00 18.2 mph ( 29.3 km / h ).
