Data link

A connection between two or more terminals is referred to as data link for data transmission. Spoken by a data link, here is a connection via the data cable, or wireless, via radio or optically, meaning. The transfer of information is done almost exclusively digital. For data exchange, a corresponding protocol is required, which must be known to all terminals.

Types

Basically, three different types of data links can be distinguished:

  • Duplex: data flow in both directions at the same time.
  • Half duplex: Data flow in both directions, but not simultaneously.
  • Simplex data flow in one and the same direction.

Examples of data links are all kinds of networks in data technology, including such diverse applications such as file server, aircraft control, remote-controlled robots or space probes or modern guided weapons systems.

In Bundeswehr and NATO, the term " Tactical Data Link ( Tactical Data Link) " are used. The development of such " NATO Standard Operation Procedures ( NSOP ) " performed by the " Information Systems Sub - Committee ( ISSC ) - Data Link Working Group ( DLWG ) ". The specification Tactical data links is determined in accordance with NATO Standardization Agreement STANAG.
