David C. Johnson

David C. Johnson, (born 30 January 1940 in Batavia, New York), is a living since 1964 in Europe, American composer, flutist, performer of live electronic music, electronic music teacher and director of electronic studios.

Life

David Johnson graduated from Harvard University ( MA in Composition 1964) and in Paris with Nadia Boulanger. In Cologne he took from 1964 to 1967 at the Cologne Courses for New Music in part (Stockhausen 1971.198-204 ).

1966-67, as a freelancer at Cologne's Studio for Electronic Music of the WDR, he assisted Karlheinz Stockhausen in the production of the electronic work " hymns " and served the live electronics at the first performances of chamber music version of Stockhausen 's work " mixture " ( 1967) and at the Darmstadt collaborations that led Stockhausen: "Ensemble " in 1967 and "Music for a house ", 1968 ( Gehlhaar 1968, 39; pinion 1970, 50; Stockhausen 1971, 213 and 217). In 1968 he was a lecturer in electronic music at the Cologne Courses for New Music (Stockhausen 1971, 206).

David Johnson in 1968 was a founding member of the experimental music group with the bass guitarist Holger Schüring (later known as Holger Czukay ), keyboard player Irmin Schmidt, guitarist Michael Karoli and drummer Jaki Liebezeit, which became known under the name of Can. By 1975, he was technical director of the Feedback Studio and until 1984 he was head of the electronic studios of the Music Academy of Basel. He now lives in Basel, where he is married to the sound artist Bernadette Johnson in October 1984. His second daughter Carla was born in 1985 and is now a singer.
