Michael Karoli

Michael Karoli ( born April 29, 1948 in Straubing, † 17 November 2001 in Essen) was a German musician and composer.

Life

Michael Karoli grew up in Straubing, the end of his school days he spent in St. Gallen. After high school he began to study law, which he never finished. He became a member of the group Can, which he served until 1978 as guitarist in 1968. Early 1975, he met Shirley Argwings - Kodhek, whom he married in Essen in 1981. Mid-80s moved Karoli with his wife to Nice, where his two daughters were born. End of 1998, Michael Karoli ill with cancer. Despite two operations Karoli died in November 2001.

Career

Michael Karoli learned as a child, guitar, violin and cello. During his school years in Switzerland, he played in various student and jazz bands. Through his friendship with his guitar teacher Holger Czukay Karoli guitarist was in Can, in 1974, he took over with Irmin Schmidt singing. After the dissolution Cans 1978, he opened his own studio Outer Space Studios in an old olive mill in the French Alps. During this time he developed the Micro Sonic recording technology. From 1978 Karoli devoted his recording studio and the drums. From 1981 to 1986 he studied African rhythms and African dance at Seni Camara. During this period he also perfected his composition concept. In 1984, Holger Czukay with Karoli, Jaki Liebezeit and Jah Wobble several concerts in Germany (including the Rockpalast ). Between 1977 and 1995, played Karoli guitar and bass on various albums and film soundtracks from Irmin Schmidt and Holger Czukay. From 1986 Karoli worked with Holger Czukay at the Can- album Rite Time, published in 1988. In parallel, both published in 1987 together with the Belgian singer Arno Charlatan and 1989 Flux & Mutability with David Sylvain, played on the flute Karoli. In 1992 he published with Can Sleep Last Night and wrote the film score for Until the End of the World by Wim Wenders. In 1993, he took with Belgian Associality on an album, which he co-produced. End of the 90 he played numerous concerts, among others, Damo Suzuki, Mani Neumeier, Matthias Keul, Mandjao and his group instantaneous contact. His last concert was held in 2001 in New York, with Suicide, James Chance, Hvratsky, Lary 7 and Malcolm Mooney Club " The Cooler ".
