David Gvantseladze

Dawit Gwanzeladse (Georgian დავით გვანცელაძე; born March 28, 1937 in Batumi, † 1 MAY 1984 Tbilisi ) was a Georgian wrestler. He won the bronze medal at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo in Greco-Roman wrestling in lightweight.

Life

Dawit Gwanzeladse grew up in Georgia and was delegated by the first successes in the youth field to Tbilisi. There he became a Soviet top wrestler in the Greco- Roman style. In 1960 he made the first sustained attention to himself when he became Soviet champion at lightweight before W. Fesenko and A. Korsakov. The jump to the Olympics this year in Rome, he but have not yet managed. But he was in a Soviet team that fought in Moscow against the Federal Republic of Germany. He defeated the silver medalist of Rome welterweight Günther Maritschnigg from Witten -Annen on points.

In 1961, he wrestled with the Soviet team then twice in the Federal Republic of Germany. Here he met twice and won both fights Günther Maritschnigg.

The qualification for an international championship succeeded Dawit Gwanzeladse until 1963. He competed for the Soviet Union at the World Championships in Helsingborg at lightweight. With four wins and a draw against Stevan Horvat from Yugoslavia, he came behind Horvat to 2nd place and thus won the World Championship silver medal. Among the defeated him wrestlers were also Klaus rust from Witten, who won the World Cup bronze medal and Eckhard Schulz from Rostock.

1964 represented Dawit Gwanzeladse the Soviet Union at the Olympic Games in Tokyo in lightweight. In Tokyo, he scored victories over the German inter alia starter Franz Schmitt from Mainz and the world champion Stevan Horvat and Eero Tapio from Finland. But he was defeated by Valeriu Bularca from Romania and Kazim Ayvaz from Turkey and thus won the bronze medal.

Dawit Gwanzeladse also included in the following years the leading wrestlers in the Soviet Union at lightweight, but came to no stakes in international championships more.
