David Ireland (author)

David Ireland ( born August 27, 1927 in Lakemba, New South Wales (now part of Sydney ) ) is an Australian writer.

Ireland's work is influenced by Joaquim Maria Machado and Laurence Sterne de Assis. He breaks his novels into loosely coupled sequences. His empathy described fictional characters reflect the futile search for meaning of the individual in an inhumane industrial society.

He received three times the Miles Franklin Award in 1971 for The unknown industrial prisoner, 1976 The glass canoe and 1979 for A woman of the future.
