David J. Skorton

David Skorton January ( born November 22, 1949 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin) is an American physician, university teacher and since 2006 president of Cornell University.

Biography

After school he started in 1966 to study psychology at the University of California at Los Angeles ( UCLA) and put this in 1968 at Northwestern University, where he in 1970 with a Bachelor of Science (BS Psychology) earned. He then completed a postgraduate course in medicine at the Medical School of Northwestern and graduated in 1974 with a Medical Doctor ( MD).

In 1980 he accepted an appointment as Professor of Medicine at the University of Iowa and taught there for more than 25 years until 2006. Initially, he was director of the Laboratory for cardiovascular treatments from 1982 to 1996 and next between 1985 and 1989 Director of the Department for general internal medicine and 1889-1992 co-chair of clinical programs in the Department of internal Medicine. After that, he was between 1992 and 2003 Vice- President of the University for research, before he was 2003-2006 President of the University of Iowa.

September 7, 2006, David Skorton President, Cornell University, Ithaca (New York) and thus of one of the eight universities of the so-called Ivy League. Skorton is also a member of several medical organizations and in 1978 became a member of the American Heart Association, 1980 American Association for the Advancement of Science, in 1981 the American College of Cardiology, the American College of Physicians in 1984 and 1987, the American Physiological Society.

He is also a member of the Board of Governors of the New York Academy of Sciences. Most recently, he was a member of the 2010 Institute of Medicine of the National Academies in November.
