David Laird Dungan

David Laird Dungan (* 1936, † 30 November 2008) was Distinguished Professor of Humanities and Professor of New Testament and Early Christianity at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. He had specialized in the Synoptic problem. As a member of the research team of the " International Institute of Gospels research " he was a representative of the Two - Gospel Theory, which is also known as the Griesbach hypothesis.

Life

Dungan was born the son of Presbyterian missionaries in New Haven ( Connecticut ). By 1940, he grew up in Shanghai, then in Berea (Kentucky), where in 1953 he graduated from high school. At the College of Wooster, he received his B. A. (1957 ), at McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago his Bachelor of Divinity (BD) (1963) and at Harvard Divinity School, his theological doctorate (1968). From 1967 to 2002 he was a faculty member of the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. There he held biblical studies and church history courses. He was also invited at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome to lecture (1976-1977 and 2006).

Dungan died suddenly on November 30, 2008, when he was working on a larger multimedia book project, which was titled Images of Jesus in Cultural Perspective. His colleagues have written a Festschrift in his honor.
