David M. Kelley

David M. Kelley is a professor at Stanford University and founder and chairman of IDEO. Kelley is considered namesake and one of the pioneers of innovation method Design Thinking.

Influence and work

After his degree in electrical engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, he worked for several years in the development departments of NCR and Boeing. After he had heard of a new course in product design at Stanford University, he made his second final in 1978 there.

Kelley founded in 1978 along with Dean Hovey Hovey - Kelley his first company which was later renamed after the departure of Hovey in David Kelley Design. There, the first computer mouse was developed for Apple and others.

In 1991 he merged his company with two other design studios to start IDEO. In parallel, he began in 1978 to teach at Stanford and became a full professor in 1991. He is co-founder and director of the d.school - The Hasso Plattner Institute of Design.

Awards and honors

On the occasion of the centenary of Stanford David Kelley was honored by the University for its " blend of energy and unlimited imagination ." In 2000, Kelley was awarded the " Chrysler Design Award" and elected to the National Academy of Engineering. 2001 Kelley and IDEO was awarded by the Smithsonian Institute the " National Design Award". He was appointed " in Mechanical Engineering Donald W. Whittier Professor " from Stanford for 2002. 2009 Kelley received the " Edison Achievement Award " from Rutgers University.
