David Motiuk

David Motiuk ( born January 13, 1962 in Vegreville, Alberta, Canada) is the reigning Ukrainian Greek Catholic Bishop of Edmonton in Canada.

Life

From 1980 Motiok David graduated from the University of Alberta studying for computer science. From 1984 to 1989 he studied at the St. Paul University in Ottawa, he attained degrees in Engineering (Bachelor ) and Canon Law (Master) and was awarded the Licentiate of Canon Law.

On August 21, 1988, he was ordained by Bishop Demetrius Martin Greschuk in Edmonton as a priest and was from 1989 to 1993 in several parishes operate. In 1994 he was summoned as a chaplain at St. Josaphat Cathedral in Edmonton and held that post until 1996. In the same period he worked as a legal adviser, financial manager, and at the College of Edmonton as a consultant in the Episcopal Ordinariate of the Eparchy of Edmonton. In 1996 he received his doctorate at the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome as a doctor of canon law. His thesis was: "The Particular Law of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Canada". From 1996 to 2001 he was in Ottawa, he taught at Holy Spirit Ukrainian Catholic Seminary and also taught at the Faculty of Theology at Saint Paul University and the Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytskyy Institute in Ottawa. Between 1997 and 2002, he was appointed to the Canadian Bishops' Conference as a consultant to the Commission for Canon Law and International rites. Since 2002 he has worked as a consultant in the Commission on Theology.

On 5 April 2002 he received the appointment as auxiliary bishop in Winnipeg and Titular Bishop of Mathara in Numidia. In Winnipeg he was also vicar general of the archeparchy. The Major Archbishop Cardinal Lubomyr Husar and the co-consecrators Archbishop Michael Bzdel CSsR of Winnipeg and Bishop Lawrence Daniel Huculak OSBM of Edmonton initiated him on 11 June 2002 to the bishop. Pope Benedict XVI. appointed him on 25 March 2007 to the Bishop of Edmonton.

Bishop Davis Motiuk is regarded as extraordinary skill in the field of Canon Law for the Eastern Churches. He is a member of the following companies: Society for the Law of the Eastern Churches (Vienna), Canadian Canon Law Society, Canon Law Society of America Canon Law and Society of Great Britain and Ireland.
