David Remez

David Remez (Russian Давид Ремез Hebrew דוד רמז; * May 23, 1886 in Kopys (Russian Копысь ) in Rajon Orsha ( Belarus ) as David Drabkin (Russian Давид Драбкин, Hebrew דוד דרבקין ); † May 19 1951), was an Israeli politician of the Zionist labor movement. He was one of the first signatories of the Israeli declaration of independence 37 and in the first Provisional Government Transport Minister of the country.

Life

He received his religious education by his grandfather, a rabbi who taught him in the Talmud. Remez studied from 1911 in Turkey Jura. During his studies he met David Ben- Gurion and Yitzhak Ben-Zvi know. In 1913 he went to Palestine, which was then under Ottoman rule. In Palestine, he worked as a farm laborer in Ben Shemen, Be'er Tuvia, Zichron Yaakov and Karkur.

Political career

His political career began in 1920/21, shortly after the establishment of the League of Nations Mandate for Palestine, when he first became involved in the union movement. Remez is one of the founding members of Ben- Gurion's Mapai Labor Party.

After the Israeli declaration of independence on 14 May 1948 he was a member of the provisional government and was a candidate in the election as the first Knesset. 1949 Remez was a member of the Mapei first Minister of Transport of Israel, from 1950 to 1951 he was Minister of Education.

Honors

After his death, numerous streets and squares were named after him in Israel, including the district Ramot Remez, Haifa, the Remez Square Jerusalem and the Remez Junction.

Family

He is the father of Aharon Remez and the grandfather of Gideon Remez.
