David Rimmer

David Rimmer ( born January 20, 1942 in Vancouver, British Columbia ) is a Canadian avant-garde film director, experimental filmmaker and photographer.

Life and work

David Rimmer studied until 1963 Mathematics and Economics at the University of British Columbia. From 1963 to 1965 he undertook world travel and decided for the moment to be still no serious worker

From 1965 to 1966 he returned to Vancouver and spent a year studying English at the University of British Columbia. In 1967 he began a master 's program in English at Simon Fraser University. He attended a seminar " filmmaking " at Stan Fox, a producer of CBC. With support from his teacher, he shot his first film "Know Place" which was produced by CBC / Radio -Canada. He decided to cancel the university and to become filmmakers. In 1968 he directed his first independent film, Square Inch Field, which at the Yale Film Festival and the St. Lawrence movie won festival awards. He also worked for some time with Michael Snow together.

From 1970 to 1972 he lived in New York City. He then returned to Vancouver and toured in 1973 the Netherlands, Germany, Italy and the UK.

David Rimmer was with some movies as a participant in Documenta 5 in Kassel in 1972 in the Department of Film Acting: represent New American Cinema.

Among the Canadian experimental filmmakers applies Rimmer is an exemplary craftsman - his work is consistently subtle and complex, and often very clever.

From 1974 to 1979 he taught filmmaking at the University of British Columbia and since 1979 at Simon Fraser University.
