David Seely, 4th Baron Mottistone

David Peter Seely, 4th Baron Mottistone CBE, KStJ (* December 16, 1920, † 24 November 2011) was a British peer, soldier and politician of the Conservative Party.

Life and career

Seely was born on December 16, 1920, the son of JEB Seely, 1st Baron Mottistone ( 1868-1947 ) and his second wife Evelyn Izme Murray ( 1886-1976 ), the daughter of Montolieu Oliphant - Murray, 1st Viscount Elibank (1840 - 1927) was born. He was a grandson of Sir Charles Seely, 1st Baronet ( 1833-1915 ). He was baptized with Winston Churchill and the then Duke of Cornwall, later Edward VIII, and Prince Philip as godparents. He attended the Royal Naval College at Dartmouth.

Seely served in World War II. In 1955 it was Commander of the Royal Navy. From 1958 to 1959 he was commander of the HMS Cossack. From 1961 to 1963 he was Deputy Director ( Deputy Director ) of the signal Division at the Admiralty. He took from 1964 to 1965 in the Malayan Campaign was Mentioned in Despatches and part.

In 1960 he became captain and served from 1963 to 1965 in (D) 24 Escort Squadron and on the HMS Ajax. Seely came in 1967 at his own request to retire. From 1967 to 1969 he was Director of Personnel trg Radio Rentals Ltd.. When Distributive Industry Trading Board, he was 1969-1975 and 1975-1981 at the Cake and Biscuit Alliance Director.

He was from 1981 to 1999 parliamentary aide ( Parliamentary Advisor) and 1981-1983 Export secretary (export Secretary ). In 1981 he was also DL the Isle of Wight.

From 1986 to 1995 he was Lord Lieutenant of the Isle of Wight and the last governor ( governor) of the Isle of Wight from 1992 to 1995, where the Seely family since the 1850s played a prominent role. Seely from 1987 to 1991 president ( chairman ) of the Bureau of Applied Sciences and was honored by the Bournemouth University with an honorary doctorate degree of Doctor of Literature in 1993. In 1984, he was Commander of the British Empire. He also belonged to the Royal Yacht Squadron.

He was Chairman of the Trustees ( Chairman of Trustees ) of SANE, a charity organization for mental health. From 1990 to 1993 he was president of East Wessex Tavra.

Membership in the House of Lords

Seely inherited in 1966 after the death of his half brother Arthur Seely, 3rd Baron Mottistone, the title of Baron Mottistone and the time associated seat in the House of Lords. His inaugural address was delivered on 27 April 1967. His seat he lost by the House of Lords Act 1999.

Honors

1989 Seely was awarded the Order of Saint John. He was a Fellow of the Institute of Engineering and Technology and the Institute of Personnel Management (now FCIPD ).

Family and death

He married on September 16, 1944 Anthea Christine McMullan († 2010), daughter of Thomas Victor Wallace McMullan. They had five children, three daughters and two sons. The eldest daughter died in 1955 at the age of 8 years.

Seely died on 24 November 2011 at the age of 90 years. The title was inherited by his eldest son Peter Seely, 5th Baron Mottistone (* 1949).
