David Stoddart, Baron Stoddart of Swindon

David Leonard Stoddart, Baron Stoddart of Swindon ( born May 4, 1926) is a British independent politician.

Political career

Stoddart was from 1954 to 1972 a member of the Reading Borough Council and directed the district administration of 1965 to 1972. Between 1970 and 1983, Stoddart as a Labour candidate Abgeordneterfür the constituency of Swindon. In 1983, he lost the mandate to the Conservatives Simon Coombs. Stoddart was from 1975 to 1978 the Government Whip fraction.

1983 Stoddart was appointed as Baron Stoddart of Swindon in Reading in Berkshire for Life Peer. He was expelled from the Labour Group in the House of Lords, after he supported in the United Kingdom General Election a candidate of the Socialist Alliance in 2002. Stoddart explained his support of the Socialist Alliance candidate with the fact that he refused the transfer of the former Conservative MP Shaun Woodward to the Labour Party.

Stoddart was until May 2007 Chairman of the Campaign for Independent Britain in calling for a withdrawal of the UK from the EU.
