Davis Strait

Geographical location

The Davis Strait ( Davis Strait English, Danish Davisstrædet ) is the strait between Baffin Island and Greenland, the Canadian, it connects the Labrador Sea with the Baffin Bay. It is 700 km long and 300 km wide. Therefore, it is also one of the widest straits in the world. The largest town on the Davis Strait is Sisimiut, the second largest town in Greenland.

Apart from the more than 170 km long and 1.5 to 8 km wide, navigable along its entire length Kangerlussuaq Fjord can be reached at the end of the same 550 - soul village and its international airport.

History

Around the year 1000 Leif Eriksson crossed it was the first European in a westerly direction whereupon he discovered Vinland. In 1585 she was first traveled by the English navigator John Davis in modern times. Today it bears his name.
