DB Class V 162

As a class V 162, respectively from 1968 series 217, 15 built from 1965 to 1968 diesel locomotives of the German Federal Railroad are referred to, which were used until the end of 2011 by the Deutsche Bahn AG.

History

Prehistory

In the early 60s, the then German Federal Railroad ( DB) and the German rail vehicle industry developed with the class V 160, later referred to as the 216 series, a Dieselloktyp with diesel- hydraulic power transmission for use on medium-duty passenger and freight trains on main and secondary lines. The locomotives V 160 possessed a steam boiler for heating passenger cars, but not on an electric train heating. It became apparent, however, that in the future, especially cars would be used with electric train heating.

Prototypes

The DB was therefore 1963 at Krupp AG to develop a 160 V version with electric train heating in order that should bear the type designation V 162. Krupp supplied then 1965, the two prototypes V and V 162 001 162 002, which were reinforced in 1966 by the third prototype V 162 003.

The three locomotives each had one built by MTU 16-cylinder engine of the type 16V652 TB10 with 1,427 kW ( 1,940 hp). The power of the main engine, however, should fully represent the traction available. Since Krupp mid-1960s was no more powerful engine for the V 162 is available, had to be scheduled for the operation of the heating generator of electric train heating, an auxiliary engine. This in turn caused a prolonged compared to V 160 locomotive body with a total length over buffers of 16.4 meters.

Used as an auxiliary motor Krupp 12- cylinder engine manufacturer MAN D3650 HM3U, the (500 PS) can produce power 386 kW and also as traction diesel engine in the range is 614 use. As required by the DB of the auxiliary motor should be in the freight sector, where he was not needed for the operation of the heating generator, also supply traction power. The traction power can be increased if necessary to 1,813 kW. The Heizgeneratoren the three prototypes were from different manufacturers: In V 162 001 from BBC, in V 162 002 AEG and V 162 003 from Siemens. The Siemens generator in the V 162 003 has shown its merit at best.

The three prototypes were tested comprehensively 1965-1968. They came here from the locations Hamm and Mühldorf used.

Production locomotives

Building on the positive experience with the prototype gave the DB in 1967 the construction of twelve series locomotives at Krupp in order. According to the new, valid from 1968 numbering scheme, the type or class designation of V 162 was changed to (series ) 217. The series locomotives were numbered 217011-217022, the prototypes were to 217001-217 003

The twelve series locomotives of the series 217 have been delivered during the year 1968. The six vehicles were assigned to the DB sites Hagen- Eckesey and Regensburg. After they were initially equipped with brake shoes, the production locomotives were 1971 disc brakes, making the speed limit by 20 km / h to 140 km / h could be increased.

Even when ordering the series locomotives was foreseeable that then no further vehicles of this type be built: Coinciding originated from 1968, the first representative of the series 218, with the traction and heat output of a single 2500 hp ( later 2800 hp) engine are generated. From this type of locomotive several hundred copies were built in the following years.

Service history

The end of 1970, beginning of 1971, the three prototype locomotives used by Mühldorf were implemented from the DB Bahnbetriebswerk Regensburg, where already six locomotives of the series were stationed. After the locomotives had come from Mühldorf from Upper Bavaria used, their use is now extended radius mainly in the Upper Palatinate and Upper Franconia. 1972 the six series locomotives initially appointed by the Hagen- Eckesey location were restationed at Regensburg, so that all 15 locomotives were concentrated in Regensburg. They were there, among others for stringing heavier freight trains on the links Regensburg - used Furth im Wald - Schwandorf - Hof and Nuremberg - Sulzbach -Rosenberg - Schwandorf.

On 28 April 1989, the prototype locomotives were 217 001 and 217 002 officially declared a railroad maintenance vehicles for intra official purpose, and thereby a change in numbers was accompanied in 753 001 and 753 002. Both locomotives were often used for test and measurement journeys in connection with the testing of vehicles since 1974 to act as a brake locomotive. The renaming was therefore purely formal character.

In 1993, the series locomotives of the series 217 came on a trial basis before formed from double-deck trainsets on the link Mühldorf - Munich used because the DB class prepared 218 problems. The vehicles with the numbers 217011-217021 an exhaust system ( so-called scoops ) was installed on both diesel engines for this purpose. However, this operation took only 1 ½ days (!), As the series 217 from the services her not proven, so that locomotives of the series 218, the double -decker trains took over again and the vehicles used Series 217 returned back to Regensburg.

In 1998, the division of the first established in 1994 division of Deutsche Bahn traction in the divisions Highway / DB long-distance transport, transport / DB Regio and freight / DB Cargo. The 217er has been since the beginning of 2008 the freight and therefore the DB subsidiary DB Cargo, later Raillion: DB Schenker Rail Germany allocated. In 2000, all locomotives of the series 217 of Regensburg changed to Mühldorf. Due to expiry of the statutory time limits were 217 003 and 217 022 z - placed as the first machine. On the other hand, 217 017, 012 019 and one in 2008 again - get home examination at the Bremen plant, which they are, however, the characteristic of this series Heizdieselmotor was removed and replaced by a ballast weight - albeit simplified. Initially planned DB Railion, the locomotives to reactivate 217 003 and 217 022, but this was not pursued due to a lack of demand due to the global economic crisis, which was triggered by the financial crisis starting in 2007, as well as their poor general condition due. On the contrary, several 217 parked in the years 2008 and 2009. After the planning of DB Schenker Rail Germany the complete series should be 217 originally taken the end of 2009 out of service, so that then only the 217 001 would be left over from DB Systemtechnik. Because chronic lack of locomotives in Mühldorf the operating time was extended until 2011.

Last use

In November 2011, with 217 012, 017, 019 and 021 only four locomotives operational, which came from the Bh Mühldorf from used without their own roster. After 217 002 was provided z 6 September 2011, the remaining four aircraft followed by the end of 2011. Recent operational machine was 217 017, which was put z December 17, 2011. The Prototyplok 217 001 was with an engine failure z in the fall of 2010 and not repaired because of their small rest periods. Previously, she was from Munich nationwide in test and measurement drives in use.

Museum locomotives

Locomotive 217 001 is located since May 2011 as inoperable exhibit in the SVG Railway World Horb am Neckar. The locomotive 217 014 is stored in the DB Museum Koblenz, while 217 002 were sold in the fall of 2012 to the company web Touristik Express in Nuremberg and is retained there after a renewed major investigation since February 22, 2013 operational.
