de Havilland D.H.34

The de Havilland DH34 was a continuous tape as a single-engine biplane airliner of the British manufacturer de Havilland Aircraft Company in the 1920s. The twelve -built machines were used only a few years of Imperial Airways and its predecessor companies.

Design

After the DH18 had not proved to be economical enough, Geoffrey de Havilland began in 1921 with the development of designed for ten passengers monoplane DH29 Doncaster. At the same time, work on the DH32, DH18 with a further development of more fuel-efficient Rolls -Royce Eagle engines started. Since both designs proved to be insufficient, the development work has been terminated and replaced by the double-decker DH34. The new design took over the body of Doncaster and was thus able to carry ten passengers.

The DH34 had a planked with plywood fuselage and fabric-covered wooden wings. The designed for two pilots cockpit was located in front of the wings and the passenger cabin. Was powered by a Napier Lion piston engine that could be launched from a momentum starter.

After the airline Daimler Hire had ordered two models, the prototype made its first flight on March 26, 1922. After a serious accident in 1923 that was 34A with greater span.

Use

The DH34 began on April 2, 1922 their use in Daimler on the route between London and Paris. Four of the six used by Daimler DH34 were in possession of the Air Council. Instone Air Line also created four hired models. The Soviet airline Dobroljot acquired another copy.

After the founding of Imperial Airways on 1 April 1924 a merger of Daimler, Instone, Handley Page Transport and British Marine Air Navigation, seven DH34 were owned by the new company. The last four aircraft were scrapped in 1926 and placed out of service.

The DH34 was used mainly in cross-Channel traffic. The prototype was alone in the first nine months of 8000 hours in the air, the second model brought it to 160,000 km without intermediate overhaul. In the first four years, six DH34 lost by some very serious accidents.
