de Havilland D.H.50

The de Havilland DH50 was a single engine biplane of the British manufacturer de Havilland Aircraft Company in the 1920s. Licensed versions of aircraft designed for four passengers originated in Australia, Belgium and Czechoslovakia.

History

In the 1920s, originating from the First World War aircraft had to be replaced by more modern models. De Havilland then developed based on the DH9 an airplane with a laid out for four passengers cabin and an open cockpit for a pilot. The hull was covered with plywood.

The first DH50 made ​​its maiden flight on 30 July 1923 and has already won an award for reliability few days later after the flight from Copenhagen to Gothenburg. 17 Of the 38 copies built emerged at de Havilland and the other as a license versions with other manufacturers. Several different engines were used.

1924 won the prototype of the DH50, the King's Cup Race. The second model, Siddeley Jaguar engine called DH50J because of its Armstrong, managed the 25,000 -kilometer route from London to Cape Town between November 1925 and February 1926. After conversion to a float plane it flew in 1926 by the UK to Australia.

In Australia, staged eleven under license, of which four 50A and 50J three by Qantas, three 50A at Western Australian Airlines and a 50A by the Larkin Aircraft Supply Company. With the built in Qantas aircraft of the Royal Flying Doctor Service began its activities. Three copies built the Belgian company SABCA, seven DH50 originated in Prague by Aero.
