Dean Barrow

Dean Oliver Barrow ( born March 2, 1951) is a Belizean lawyer and politician. Since February 2008 he has been Prime Minister of Belize.

Life

His political career started Barrow in 1983 when he ran for City Council of Belize City and won the election. In the general election in 1984 he was able to beat Ralph Fonseca and then became Foreign Minister and Attorney General. From 1993 to 1998 Barrow was again foreign minister of the country. He was then in 1998 chairman of the United Democratic Party, and thus Leader of the Opposition - in the election defeat of his party just three seats in parliament could be achieved this year.

Prime minister

In the parliamentary elections of 7 February 2008, the UDP achieved a landslide victory, with 25 of 31 seats. Barrow was sworn in as prime minister on 8 February 2008. He was thus the first black prime minister of the small country. His cabinet, where he worked as finance minister in personal union, was established on February 11.

The UDP won again in 2012 parliamentary elections, but with significantly less distance. Barrow could thus be selected for the second time as prime minister. His stated goal is to reduce the high level of debt of the country and to negotiate lower bond rates.

Family

The son of Dean Barrow is the famous rapper Shyne, who was born in 1978 as Jamal Barrow.
