United Democratic Party (Belize)

The United Democratic Party (UDP) is a party in Belize and adjacent to the People's United Party, the second major party in the country.

From 2008 to 2012, the party held 25 of 31 seats in the House of Representatives of Belize and presented with Dean Barrow the head of government. The UDP won the elections again in 2012, but with a little distance and a ratio of 17 to 14 seats, the People's United Party. Barrow could thus be selected for the second time as prime minister.

Led the party since 1998, is Dean Barrow.

The UDP was founded on 27 September 1973 from three parties to break the dominance of the ruling PUP. The three parties were the National Independence Party (NIP ), the People's Development Movement (PDM ) and the Liberal Party, then headed by Manuel Esquivel.

The conservative party of the center-right is cooperating with the U.S. Republicans and is a member of the Caribbean Democrat Union ( CDU), a regional organization of the world's conservative International Democrat Union ( IDU ).
