The Decatur County Courthouse is a historic courthouse in Greensburg, Indiana, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. It is mainly known for its roof on a tree grows.

History

The first Court House of Decatur County was created in the 1820s and consisted of a log cabin. On May 14, 1822 court first met in the building, which belonged to a Thomas Hendricks. Some years later, a small brick building was built in a public place, in which the court was held until 1855. The construction of the building still exists today began in 1850. The construction costs were approximately U.S. $ 100,000 (in prices of 1861, according to current prices 2.836 million U.S. dollars). At the time of its completion, the building was considered to be the finest courthouse in the state of Indiana.

In the early 1870s, it was discovered that had gone up on the roof of approximately 33 m high tower tree seeds and a total of five trees were sighted. The representatives of the Countyverwaltung feared soon damage to the tower, and in 1888 a tower worker was hired to remove some of the Spößlinge. Of the two untreated vegetable one finally reached a height of about 15 feet ( about 4.5 m) and the strain reached at its base a diameter of five inches ( about eight inches ). Sometime began at the southeastern corner of the tower, another seedling to thrive, reaching within a few years a considerable height. Later, in the southwestern corner tower grew a sapling.

The exact nature of these trees has been the subject of discussion. The Smithsonian Institute once stated that it would be in the plants to Grobzähnige aspens, but has a more recent study by the staff of Purdue University found that the currently growing there is a mulberry tree.

1994, a renovation and expansion was made on the north side of the house, the floor space of the building was almost doubled. Here we removed the plaster, so that the original facade was exposed brick.
