Deep Funk

Deep Funk, also known as Rare radio or Raw Funk, is a special brand of radio. It is rare radio recordings that have been added to the rule 1966-1972 and published in small labels at 45 rpm. Chance of those singles were released before or after this period. Some of these labels which came from Chicago, Detroit, New York, Philadelphia and Los Angeles, often produced only small runs of singles for promotional purposes. Sometimes they even made it into the regional charts and into the black R & B charts, but remained largely unknown. Similar to the Northern Soul Deep collect radio lovers such radio recordings. Northern Soul is a British music movement in the late 1960s formed. While Northern Soul fans since the 1960s, collecting rare soul records, collectors and DJs mainly rare radio plates only began to be discovered in the 1980s.

The term was coined by the DJ Keb Darge of the Legendary Deep Funk Nights held at the nightclub Madame Jojo's in London's Soho. Known representatives of Deep Funk, among them James Brown, The Meters, Eddie Bo, Spanky Wilson, Dyke & The Blazers and Alvin Cash.

The Deep - Funk sound is a kind of rough rhythm and blues, played with breaks, horn sections and often with a Hammond organ. Some of the music clearly deviates from the typical disco funk of the 1970s, as the sound is much more raw and unpolished. The term Deep in this context means that with this type of radio the African- American roots of the black rhythm and blues in the 1950s and 60s can be clearly heard. Some pieces overlap with musical styles such as jazz or boogaloo.

In recent times, playing bands like Sugarman Three, The New Mastersounds, Lefties Soul Connection, Speedometer, Sharon Jones & The Dap - Kings, Connie Price & The Keystones, The Poets Of Rhythm, Quantic or blow up! Deep - funk music. The Dap - Kings also took part in the recordings for the album Back to Black by Amy Winehouse.

Collectors scene in Germany

Essential for the dissemination of this music is the collectors scene. In Germany there is a small scene of collectors who regularly organizes events where Deep Funk plates are played. The often very rare singles are similar to many Northern Soul singles due to the small numbers for 3 at online marketplaces - traded or even four - figure sums.
