Background

With the last album of the band 's big shot has succeeded in what had her international breakthrough result. Extensive tours throughout Europe followed, and the songs of the follow-up album were written during the tour and then recorded within four weeks. Little more than a year after Razorblade Romance Deep Shadows and Brilliant already appeared highlights. Critics complain that, well to be able to build from the ground rapidly to the success of Razorblade Romance, this album was produced quickly and therefore have the songs uninspired. The singer Ville Valo himself referred to the plate in hindsight, especially in terms of the high proportion quiet songs, it was less a classic HIM album, but rather a Ville- Valo solo album.

The album was released on 27 August 2001 at the same time in Finland, Germany and other relevant countries of Europe. In Finland, it reached No. 1 on the charts in Germany at least 2nd place to the album, three singles decoupled ( Pretending In Joy and Sorrow, Heartache Every Moment & Close to the Flame ). Although these, could only Pretending in Finland climb to the top of the charts, but all singles sold internationally, with considerable success, but although worse than the previous album. From September 2001 to December was followed by an extensive European tour.

For this album, Janne returned Puurtinen, also known as Emerson Burton, keyboardist back in the band. Years earlier, he had already been a band member and now replaces the entered personal reasons back, Juska Salminen ( Zoltan Pluto). Since then, the members of the structure is constant.

In addition to the standard version of Deep Shadows and Brilliant Highlights appeared as a limited edition digipak with two bonus songs. At Christmas 2001, the album was also available in a special limited edition album, with three bonus songs, two music videos, a new cover and slipcase.
