Demetrios Christodoulou

Demetrios Christodoulou (Greek Δημήτριος Χριστοδούλου Dimitrios Christodoulou, * October 19, 1951 in Athens ) is a Greek mathematician and physicist. He has the American citizenship.

Christodoulou studied physics at Princeton University in 1970 and received his Master of Arts (MA). A year later he received his Ph.D. in Physics with John Archibald Wheeler at the same university.

Christodoulou was now 1971-1972 Research Fellow at the California Institute of Technology. From 1972 to 1973 he was professor of physics at the University of Athens. After that, he was from 1973 to 1974 worked as a Visiting Scientist at CERN in Geneva and worked from 1974 to 1976 at the International Center for Theoretical Physics in Trieste.

From 1976 to 1981 he was a Humboldt Fellow at the Max Planck Institute in Munich, was then 1981-1983 Visiting Member at the Courant Institute, and then finally took from 1983 to 1987 teaching at Syracuse University, where he 1983-1985 Associate Professor of Physics, and then from 1985 to 1987 was professor of mathematics.

Then Christodoulou was 1988-1992 Professor of Mathematics at the Courant Institute, and from 1992 to 2001 at Princeton University. Since 2001 he is professor of mathematics and physics at the ETH Zurich.

Christodoulou received in 1981, the Otto Hahn Medal of the Max Planck Society, in 1991 the Xanthopoulos Award and a MacArthur Fellowship in 1993. 1998 he received a Guggenheim Fellowship. In 1999, was honored for his contribution to the mathematical theory of general relativity with the Bôcher Memorial Prize. He was Invited Speaker ( spacetime The stability of Minkowski ) on the ICM 1990 in Kyoto. In 2008 he received the Tomalla price. In 2011 he was awarded with Richard Hamilton Shaw Prize in Mathematics. He is a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society. He was selected as Plenarsprecher at the International Congress of Mathematicians 2014 in Seoul.

With Sergiu Klainerman he proved the global stability of the Minkowski space, what both a book written (The global nonlinear stability of Minkowski space, Princeton Mathematical Series, 1993).
