Democratic and Social Movement (Algeria)

The Democratic and Social Movement (Arabic حركة ديمقراطية واجتماعية, French Mouvement Démocratique et Social, symbol " MDS " ) is a left -wing party in Algeria. It was founded as a party of the Socialist Avant-garde ( Parti de l' Avant -Garde Socialiste ) in 1966 and led by Cherif El Hachemi.

History

The Party of Socialist avant-garde was the successor of the Algerian Communist Party, which was banned shortly after the independence of Algeria. Under the one-party rule of the National Liberation Front ( FLN), the vanguard party was not recognized.

Only in 1989 the party was approved in 1993 and officially re- established as Ettehadi. A group that wanted to maintain the communist legacy of the party, resigned from the Ettehadi and founded the Algerian Party for Democracy and Socialism. After 1999, the Ettehadi got its present name itself.

In the parliamentary elections of 17 May 2007, the Democratic and Social Movement received only 0.89% of the vote and won a seat in the National People's Assembly.
