Denis Gaultier

Denis Gaultier ( Gaultier le Jeune also, Gaultier de Paris * 1597 or 1603 (birthplace unknown); † January 1672 in Paris) was a French lutenist and composer.

1626 is the first time demonstrate in Paris. He studied composition with the organist Charles Racquet and worked in Paris as a sought-after virtuoso and composer until his demise. He was not employed at the court, but played in 1656 in the presence of the Swedish Queen Christina, in 1666 at a concert in honor of the wife of Louis XIII and 1671 before the King at Saint -Germain.

The music of Denis Gaultier has been handed down in two prints:

  • Pièces de luth sur trois nouveaux modes differens ( 1669) ( All compositions by Denis Gaultier )
  • Livre de tablature de ... Mr. Gaultier Sr. de Neve et de son Mr. Gaultier cousin ( posthumously completed in 1672 by the widow and M. de Montarcis )

The title of the second pressure address the problem of attribution of the works of both Gaultier at: For some of the works make the various manuscripts attributions to both Gaultier ( Gaultiuer le Jeune & Gaultier de Paris usually = Denis Gaultier, Gaultier le Vieux de Lyon, Sieur Neves de, de Vienne = Ennemond, who was born about 1575 in Vienne ( Dauphiné ) and died in Neves on 17 December 1651). Often plants are also simply referred to as " Gaultier ".

Among the many manuscripts containing works of Denis Gaultier, the magnificent manuscript of " La Rhétorique des Dieux " (D - Bkk 78 C 12) stands out. This parchment manuscript contains a formulated program maneuvered ink drawings by Eustache Le Sueur, Robert Nanteuil, and Abraham Bosse and 12 sections for music. These 12 sections are ordered in the church modes according to Antoine Parrans " Traité de musique théorique et pratique " (Paris, Ballard 1639 ). The image contents by Abraham Bosse's drawings can also be traced back to this document. The client for this manuscript is Anne- Achille de Chambré.

The listed in the preface plan of the manuscript was not completed. It lacks, inter alia, two images, there are changes in book block and a partial rebinding by folding strips, there are only 62 pieces in the prepared 108 pages respectively. Registered double-sided and only the 30 provided by those with titles. Under 27 pieces of text are entered, compiled from various contemporary works on ancient literature. The plan says that of all the pieces of such texts should be. In addition, sheets of paper are inserted with " Accords ", but are not practical mood statement, but to respectively the mode representations in the pictures. The following items relate.

The crucial question, however, for the evaluation of music items is whether the registered versions have special authority and - as is often claimed - come from the immediate vicinity of Denis Gaultier, or even by himself. A direct cooperation between the two Notatoren the Tabulatureinräge and Denis Gaultier can be largely excluded because of style of critical studies. Thus falls the special authorization, which has traditionally been granted the entries from investment and claim the magnificent manuscript away. Recent literature dates the Tabulatureintragungen over a longer period 1655-1660. If this in contrast to the earlier dating of the entire Codex with approx 1652.
