Robert Nanteuil

Robert Nanteuil (* 1623 or according to other sources 1618 or 1630 in Reims, † December 9, 1678 in Paris) was a French engraver and pastel artist.

Nanteuil was born the son of a merchant in Reims. He attended a Jesuit school, joined the Benedictines, who promoted his artistic ambitions later. He received the first orders. From about 1647 he completed his training in Paris with Philippe de Champaigne and Abraham Bosse. In 1648 he moved to Nicolas Regnesson, whose sister he married. Nanteuil developed into a leading engraver of his century. He managed to obtain orders of the French court in large numbers. 1658 he was appointed by Louis XIV to the court engraver with an annual pension of 1000 livres.

His work includes more than 240 portraits of members of the royal court and dignitaries of the kingdom, including the king, Cardinal Mazarin, Colbert, Turenne and. Among his pupils were Gérard Gérard Audran and Edelinck.
