Denis Tunnicliffe, Baron Tunnicliffe

Denis Tunnicliffe, Baron Tunnicliffe of Bracknell in the Royal County of Berkshire CBE ( born January 17, 1943) is a British pilot, business managers and Labour Party politician and since 2004 a member of the House of Lords.

Life

Studies, pilot and local politicians

After visiting the Henry Cavendish School in Derby Tunnicliffe began studying mathematics at University College London ( UCL), where he graduated in 1965 with a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc. Mathematics ). He was then trained in the College of Air Training at Hamble -le -Rice for pilots and was subsequently first co-pilot with the airline British Overseas Airways Corporation ( BOAC ) and since 1972 a pilot with British Airways, where he worked until 1986. Between 1966 and 1972 he was a member of the British Airline Pilots ' Association.

In addition Tunnicliffe began at the beginning of the 1970s his political career in local politics and was initially 1972-1975 Member of the Council of the Royal Borough of New Windsor, and at the same time 1974-1978 the Council of the County of Berkshire member. Later he was a 1983-1987 member of the Council of the Borough Bracknell Forest and between 1985 and 1987 also chairman of this committee.

Business Manager and member of the House of Lords

After leaving British Airways 1986 he became manager in the private sector, first as head of the aerospace division of International Leisure Group. He was then in 1988 Managing Director of London Underground, whose board he chaired between 1998 and 2000. At the same time, he was from 1998 to 2000, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of London Regional Transport (LRT ) and later between 2002 and 2004 Chairman of the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority ( UKAEA ).

For his services he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1993.

On 2 June 2004 Tunnicliffe was that, since 2003, Chairman of the Rail Safety and Standards Board ( RSSB ), as a life peer charged with the title Baron Tunnicliffe of Bracknell in the Royal County of Berkshire to the peerage, and has been a member of the House of Lords.

During his membership in the House of Lords he was Parliamentary 2008-2010 Managing Director of Government Group in the Upper House (Government Whip ), and at the same time first speaker for International Development and then from 2009 to 2010 for Work and Pensions.

After the election defeat of the Labour Party at the general election on 6 May 2010, he was Deputy Chief Whip of the Labour Group, and was next 2010-2011 opposition spokesman on defense. Since 2012, Lord Tunnicliffe is spokesman for the opposition Labour Group for Business, Innovation and Skills.
