Work

Slamons important work covers the HER2/neu-Rezeptor, an epidermal growth factor receptor, which is found strongly on the tumor cells of about 20 % of patients with breast cancer and directed against HER2/neu monoclonal antibody trastuzumab (trade name Herceptin), the growth of these cells inhibits. Slamons work is a particularly important example of the rapid clinical application of the results of basic research. Herceptin marked a paradigm shift in cancer therapy, as a chemotherapeutic agent could be developed targeted against specific properties of certain subgroups of tumors for the first time.

Slamons life and his efforts to explore the HER2/neu-Rezeptors and to the possibility of treatment with Herceptin have been filmed in the TV movie Living proof with Harry Connick Jr. in the lead role in 2008.
