Dennis Stock

Dennis Stock ( born July 24, 1928 in New York City, New York, † January 11, 2010 in Sarasota, Florida) was an American photojournalist and a member of the photo agency Magnum Photos.

Life

Dennis Stock was first used in the United States Army and made from 1947-1951 a photography course at the photographer Gjon Mili. In 1951 he won first prize in the Life magazine in a competition for young photographers. In the same year was stock " associate member " of the Magnum agency. From 1954 he became a full member of the Agency.

1955 Stock met the actor James Dean and implemented a series of photos with the rising young star in Hollywood, Dean's home in Indiana as well as in New York. Famous with his photography James Dean haunted Times Square, New York City, 1955, the collection was held in countless galleries and posters on postcards and one of the most reproduced photographs of the war. The black and white photograph shows the actor with raised coat and casual cigarette in his mouth on a rain-soaked day. Dennis Stock created with this design an icon that still multiplied the cult of the prematurely deceased actor.

From 1957 to the early 1960s focused his lens preferred stock to a jazz musician. In 1962 he was awarded the first prize at the International Photo Competition in Poland. In 1968 Dennis Stock of Magnum indemnify, to build his own film company Visual Objectives Inc..

From 1969 he served again as vice president of new media and film at Magnum. Mid-1970s, he toured Japan and the Far East, also created numerous picture stories such as about as contrarian regions such as Hawaii or Alaska.

Dennis Stock lived until his death in Provence, France.
