Deodato Guinaccia

Deodato Guinaccia, even Deodato Napoletano, (* 1510 in Naples, † 1585 in Messina ) was a painter of the Renaissance in Naples and Sicily.

Life

In Naples Guinaccia was the most important disciple of Polidoro Caldara, called Polidoro da Caravaggio (1490-1549), whose style of painting he made it his own and whose workshop he took over in 1549. In 1547 it had come to Naples to uprisings against the policies of the viceroy Pedro Alvarez de Toledo, which continued in the following years and largely paralyzed the cultural life.

In contrast, during this period grew the economic and cultural importance of Messina, as founded by the Jesuits in 1548, the University of Messina and numerous public and private construction projects have been implemented, so that the need for architects and artists grew.

Even before 1551 left Deodato Guinaccia Naples and settled in Messina. He created here and in the surrounding environment, many panel paintings and frescoes isolated. His first documented in Messina panel is a " proclamation " that for the high altar of S. Maria delle Grazie created Deodato ( called " Deodatus G. Neap ex voto pinxit 1551. . "). The church belonged to the Convento Teresiani at Porta Flavia, which was destroyed along with the church during an earthquake in 1783. One of his major works is the "Pieta" in the Monte di Pieta in Messina.

Of the contemporaries the composition, were extolled the chiaroscuro and the harmonious coloring of his pictures. Many of his works were destroyed during the earthquake.

The brothers Giovanni Simone and Francesco Comandè and Cesare di Napoli were his pupils.
