Deportivo Portugués

Club Deportivo Portuguese was a Venezuelan football club based in Caracas. The club was founded in 1958 and dissolved in 1985. Deportivo Portuguese in 1958, 1960, 1962 and 1967 Venezuelan football champions.

History

The football club Club Deportivo Portuguese in 1958 in Caracas, capital of Venezuela, founded by immigrants from Portugal. In the very first year of its existence, the club won the Venezuelan football championship. In the Primera División Venezuela, the first place in 1958 was occupied by one point ahead of Deportivo Español. After just those had to leave in the following year the championship, in 1960 succeeded the second win of the Venezuelan soccer championship by a final victory, before the season mode was converted into a knockout shape against Deportivo Español. Overall Deportivo Portuguese counted along with Deportivo Español and Deportivo Italia, today's Deportivo Petare to the great teams in the early days of Venezuela's professional league. Two years after the second championship the Primera División in 1962 was won again, this was achieved by a victory in the final game for the championship against Universidad Central FC after both teams were equal on points on completion of all game days. In the following years it was not until 1967, before once again the championship was won. This time occupied Deportivo Portuguese first place with a lead of seven points at Deportivo Galicia. Thanks to this success, the club where the issue was also entitled to start for the Copa Libertadores 1968. In the tournament you survived the first Venezuelan club at all the group stage in second place behind Palmeiras São Paulo and before Náutico Capibaribe and Deportivo Galicia and was qualified for the second round, then came against Peñarol Montevideo, Sporting Cristal and Emelec Guayaquil.

The 1967 season, however, was the last really successful for Deportivo Portuguese. After that no further league title was won. Only in 1972 still managed the win in the Copa Venezuela, the Venezuelan cup competition, the one previously won in 1959. In operation, Deportivo Portuguese League could still hold in the Primera División some time before 1979 after several years came with bad placements of the relegation to the second division.
